She would never what had happened to her when she was 16.
That was the sweetest memory in her life...
It was one normal school for her as she held a novel in her hands. Sitting comfortably in the car with her chaffeur driving and a maid sitting beside her, Jean took a novel out of her sling bag. "Miss, you will be going to the ballet school for a two hour lesson after school and then to the music school for a two hour lesson of violin. After that, you will be having dinner with the director of Kolna Pte Ltd's daughter, Kina Liew. After dinner, you are supposed to go for English enrichment at..."
The chaffeur talked non-stop. "Stop." Jean signalled to him. "But Miss, Director wants you to get today's agenda into your mind before reaching the school and..." "Uncle, I don't see him once a week... He's always so busy." She looked outside the window and sighed. "Miss, Director is just too concern about the company located in the different part of the world and you see..."
Jean closed her eyes and leaned her head against the window. It was another day booked with classes and lessons, no free time at all.
The car suddenly screeched to a halt and that woke her up. "What's the matter?" She rubbed her eyes and looked in front. A young man of her age was standing in the middle of the road, blocking the way and disallowing the car to pass.
"Please let me in! Someone is going to kill me! Please please!!!" He knocked continuously on the window of the car. Without a second thought, Jean opened the car door and let him in. "Let's go Uncle, we are late." she claimed.
"Thanks a lot!" The young man wiped away the sweat emerging from his forehead. "You're welcome." She said with a shy look. "Since you are such a good person, take me to my school. St. Anne High." "What a coincidence. I am currently studying in the school." Jean smiled. "Great!"
They did not meet each other until one day when the boy was running to school. Jean's car by pass him and she signalled the chaffeur to stop. "Do you want to take my car to school?" she smiled at him. "It's okay, I'm practising for my marathon." She smiled again and left for school in her car.
It was Sunday. Jean was doing her homework in the school as her ballet lesson that day would only start at 7pm. The boy was running around the basketball court in the school which was located near some benches. She was quite realived to see him there.
"Hey!" He stopped and waved to Jean. She smiled back and waved. "You have not told me your name." She shouted. "Call me Jun Long." He continued running. "Jun Long..." She mumbled happily.
She asked to cancel all her lessons after school so she could complete her homework in school. Yea, at the same time, look at Jun Long as he practised. She never knew that slowly, she fell in love with him.
"Stop there you idiot!" A chain of vulgarities was heard. Jean was staying in school as usual, doing her homework alone. "Want to beat me, come on!" Jun Long shouted back. It was then Jean realised the one Jun Long was talking to was Vincent, the son of her father's good friend.
"Jean?" Vincent came marching towards her. "You father promised that you will marry me when you are 18. Two more years to go, then we will be couples." He teased and scrolled her hair. "Get your hand off me!" She swapped his hand away and continued doing her work.
"What a joke honey, you don't need to be so angry." Vincent sat beside her and took her homework away. " My wife is so clever, always get good grades huh~" He placed his arm over her shoulder. "Go away!" She screamed. "No no no." Vincent laughed.
Upon seeing this, Jun Long could not hold his temper longer. He dashed towards Vincent and gave him a hard push. Then he grabbed Jean's hand and trying to take her away. "Stop there! You dare to touch my wife!" Vincent held the wooden bench in his hand and ran as fast as he could towards the two. As he held the bench up in the air which hit Jun Long's head.
Blood started oozing out from his forehead. "Jun Long!" Jean screamed as she held him in her arms. "I'm sorry!" Jean apologised. He smiled and lost conscious.
Jun Long did not come from a very wealthy family like those pupils studying in the school. His parents who were wealthy last time, sent him to this school before they went bankrupt. After they no longer had to money to allow him to continue study, they left him. He could stay in that school just because of his marathon. He was the country's record keeper for marathon.
He regained conscious after been sent to the hospital. "I can't tolerate the act." He said as he held Jean's hand tightly. "I know. I know." Tears rolled down from Jean's face. He immediately stretched out his hand and wiped her tears.
After a few weeks, Jun Long went back to school. Jean's mother soon knew what had happened to Jun Long, Vincent and Jean. She was so surprised that Jean had been spending her time together with a poor boy and even abandoned Vincent.
Jean was locked up at home since then. She was not allow to use the phone nor was she allow to step out of her room. She cried every day and night. Recalling the time she had with Jun Long was a torture. She could only bring tears to herself... After a few weeks of suffering, she finally fell sick. And after bringing in different doctors, the illness was confirmed.
She would be going blind.
Jun Long heard from one of Jean's friend and could not bring himself back to the running track again. He just wished he could see Jean again. Jean also wished that she could see Jun Long for once and for all, before she could not see him forever.
Vincent brought a whole gang of people and beat Jun Long up. For he thought that the reason Jean was going blind was due to Jun Long. They almost break Jun Long's leg...
"I will let you see Jun Long again if he comes in first in marathon this year." Jean's mother told Jean. "Really? He can definitely do it Mum..." Jean claimed confidently. She was still unaware of what had happened to Jun Long... She thought he would make it but...
He lost.
"Jun Long!" Jean ran towards the running track. Her mother had allowed her to see him, as she agreed to marry Vincent...
Jean would never forget Jun Long. He would always be the only one she loved, the only one she trusted. Vincent did not marry her, due to the fact she was blind. But deep inside her heart, she told herself: My heart will go on...
